Seattle buyer returns 1919 car to France

A Seattle man who paid nearly $1 million for a historic and rare car has agreed to return it to France, where it's considered a national monument.Charles Morse entered into an agreement with federal prosecutors this week to return the 1919 Turcat-Mery roadster, built for a duke who was a descendant of Louis XVI.

Morse will keep the car there or sell it to someone who will, and he hopes to find a buyer in the next few days at a car show in Paris.In 1991 the French government declared the royal estate at Randan, with all of the goods stored there - including the car - to be historic monuments, meaning they could not be permanently removed from France.

In 2004, a seller of classic cars exported the roadster to the Netherlands, and from there sold it to Morse, a car buff who first saw it at an auto show.

Morse's lawyer, David Marshall, says his client didn't know the car was supposed to remain in France and is happy to return it now that he knows otherwise.

La disparition de la taxe professionnelle inquiète les élus

Lors de son intervention télévisée jeudi soir, le chef de l'Etat a avancé le chiffre de huit milliards d'euros, qui correspond à la part de l'Etat, à laquelle il faut ajouter celle des entreprises.

"La masse qui revient dans les caisses des collectivités locales, c'est près de 29 milliards, donc il faut trouver une recette fiscale de substitution", a déclaré Jacques Pélissard, président de l'Association des maires de France (AMF).

"La taxe professionnelle acquittée par les entreprises s'élève à près de 25 milliards d'euros", note pour sa part l'Association des maires des grandes villes de France (AMGVF) dans un communiqué.
